Exposition
Melinda Sordino attended Merryweather High School. A couple weeks before school began, a back-to-school party was organized. Melinda attended the party with her friends and was very excited about the upcoming school year. At the party, she found many people participating in perilous behaviors. Drugs and alcohol were readily available and many people were under peer pressure to drink and get high. When Melinda was a little dizzy she was caught off guard and was raped. When Melinda was able to stand sturdy once again she knew this was wrong so she took it upon herself to call the police on what had happened. She did not feel comfortable with the reckless behaviors from other kids and was worried that something dangerous would happen. Melinda knew calling the police was right thing to do. Unfortunately, many of the kids who attended the party, did not feel the same way. Besides drinking and drug use, there were other activities going on that would affect and impact Melinda's life and well being. After being raped she became a mute. A mute is someone who often doesn't talk. Everyone hated her because of her reaction and actions to the party, even her friends abandoned her.
Protagonist Motivation
Melinda- Melinda is the protagonist because she believes that what she did was right and does not regret a moment in her life that she did something wrong. Also, she appreciated what she had and she still does. People did not believe her that she got raped, which leads to becoming mute as well as self doubting herself. In conclusion, she stood up for what she believed was right and it ended up being a great memory that she can think about late in her years.
Heather- Heather is a protagonist because half of the school year she stood by Melinda's side and believed in her and did not care what she had done a the party. Also, she liked Melinda for who she was. Although she got a opportunity to become more popular she took it and dropped Melinda like a fly.
Rachel- Rachel is a protagonist because she made choices that were wrong and acted very rude and mean towards Melinda. However Rachel regretted them at the end of the school year. This allowes Rachel to apogise to Melinda and letting them become friends again.
Mr. Freeman- Mr. Freeman is the protagonist because he reached out to Melinda in a way that made a difference in Melinda's perspective of life. Mr. Freeman is Melindas art teacher and through out the entire book, school year, he encouraged her to believe in herself and her art work.

Antagonist motivation
Andy- Andy is the antagonist because he rapes Melinda twice in the book and does things that are rude and extremely inappropriate. He also shows immaturity and does not deserve to be a person that is "praised." In my opinion I think that when the hockey team revealed Andy's true personality to the entire school and ruined his social reputation served him right because that it was what Andy deserved.
Rachel- Rachel is also an antagonist because in the first quarter of school year she did not believe Melinda about Andy being a creep. After the prom, she realized that Melinda was right. Then she apologized to Melinda for not beliveing her. After that Rachel continued to apologize and they became friends in the end of the book.
Heather- Heather is the antagonist because she turned on Melinda to be with the popular crowd. Heather then tried to come back and to beg Melinda to help her set up with the senior prom. Melinda didn't want help Heather and she didn't. Heather stomped out angrerly and left.

Climax
The climax is when Melinda Sordino gets raped for a second time in the fourth marking period. Melinda got raped by her biggest fear, Andy. Andy walks into the only place in school where she feels safe, the janitours closet. This is where Andy tries to rape Melinda for a secon time. Melinda then feels the courage to stand up for herself, so she shuffles around the closet trying to get away from the Andy beast. Melinda then brakes a glass vase and puts a sharp peice of the glass towards his neck. Andy surrenders and Melinda screams "No!" allowing the whole hockey team to hear what was happening.
Conflicts
In the book Speak, one of the biggest conflicts is when Melinda was at a summer party. At the party there was drinking and drugs but the worst part was when Melinda got raped by Andy Evans. After what had happened she called the cops and a lot of people got arrested for under aged drinking and taking drugs. This is how Melinda became a nobody, and a mute. Everyone hated Melinda for her actions and busting them for what had happened at the party.
Another conflict is that Heather, Melindas only friend for a period of time, wants to leave Melinda for a popular group. Melinda is usually depressed lonely some may describer her as an eeyore; she doesn't want to do anything. Heather is cheery, outgoing and will do anything fun and exciting. Together they are two completely different people, this is one reason why Heather wanted to leave,"ditch", Melinda. Heather didn't hate Melinda; she just felt compelled to leave their friendship. So in conclusion, Melinda is left in the dust by Heather who didn't give Melinda a second thought.

Resolution
On the last day of school Melinda gets raped for a second time by Andy. However, this time Melinda, a usually quite girl, screamed very loud, allowing the entire hockey team to hear her through the locked doors. Getting Melinda out, and allowing the hockey team to spread the news that they had discovered about Andy that afternoon. By the end of the day, the entire school knew just how low, insensitive and rude Andy Evans really is. Melinda was then known as the brave girl who stood up for herself and all of the other girl Andy was insensetive towards, and that is all that matters.
